Dear Friend,
- Are you a good English reader, but not a GREAT English speaker?
- Do you feel that textbook English is not teaching you the REAL English you need?
- Is it difficult for you to understand native speakers’ conversations?
- Have you already improved your English, and are you ready to go to a whole new level?
Have you noticed that native speakers rarely use the formal English you learned in school? Why not? Because you learned formal English in school, but most native speakers use casual Conversational English when they speak to each other.
Now I can really speak English!
“I followed your advice. I used the lessons exactly as you said. I downloaded the lessons and listened to them everyday. I used your schedule. Now I can really speak English! I’m so excited. Thanks for helping me finally speak English!”

Meet Your New Teachers
Hi! Learn Real English was started by A.J. Hoge, Kristin Dodds, and Joe Weiss to help you speak to, and understand, native speakers.
Several years ago, we noticed a problem. Many English students came to America and had very painful experiences. These students knew a lot of grammar. They knew a lot of vocabulary. Some could even speak and understand FORMAL English quite well. They arrived in America feeling very confident.
Then they went on the street… and they were shocked! They could not understand what people said. Every week, a new student came to us and said, “I can understand CNN and the BBC, but I can’t understand what real people are saying at business meetings, at the bus stop, in the store, or at parties.” These students were always quite worried and upset.
We became worried too. So we began to look at the problem. We knew we needed to find the cause of this problem– and then solve it.
After many months of searching, we found the cause and the answer. The cause was simple– real English speakers use a lot of idioms and slang. Real people do not speak like TV announcers. They do not speak like actors. Real people use “street English” and that kind of English is filled with casual idioms, slang, and pronunciation.
Once we discovered the cause of the problem, we worked hard to create a solution… and finally we did! We decided to record REAL conversations between native speakers. No actors. No announcers. No reading. Just real people having real, spontaneous, totally natural conversations.
After recording these conversations, we created text for all of them– because we knew that if you could read the text, you would understand the conversations more easily.
Then we identified all of the difficult idioms, slang, and other special parts of casual, real English conversations. We created vocabulary lessons to help you understand ALL of these phrases– because most of them CANNOT BE FOUND IN A DICTIONARY!
After that, we decided to use the incredibly powerful Effortless English System to teach these phrases (idioms, slang, etc.) to you. Our goal– after listening to all of the lessons you will understand 100% of the real recorded conversations.
After a lot of time and a lot of work, we finally created a complete lesson pack of Learn Real English lessons. Our students were so happy! They could finally learn to speak with REAL people in REAL situations!
We were happy too– because we are here to help and serve our students. That is our mission.
Now, we are happy to help and serve you.
Read the article below to learn more about these incredible Learn Real English lessons (and the powerful Effortless English System).
Now I Can Understand!
| “I bought Learn Real English lessons 6 months ago. My main problem was understanding; so I didn’t speak because I wasn’t able to understand the responses.
At the beginning when I listened to the 1st lesson without reading the text I was unable to understand what they were talking about. Today with the 16th lesson (without reading the text even one time before) I happily notice that I can understand 70%!!!” |
Michele Tripault, Paris, France
Old Learning Methods
Most English conversation programs don’t teach English conversation. The “conversations” in most books are fake- they are not real. Rather, these “conversations” are merely two actors reading a text.
That’s why textbook conversations are very different from real English conversations.
To understand native speakers, you must listen to real conversations– not fake textbook actors.
To speak easily to native speakers, you must use real conversations and lessons that help you understand them.
So how do you understand real conversations?
The secret is to use both real recorded conversations and the Effortless English system.
It Really Works!
“I can’t believe it. I just finished talking to an American guy for 2 hours. Two hours without worrying or translating. It was so easy. Thank you so much. The system really works.”
Nid, Bangkok, Thailand
Your Success Is Here
You CAN speak REAL English to real native speakers. What is real English? It is the English that native speakers use in real conversations.
REAL English includes slang and idioms. REAL English includes real pronunciation used by real people– not the pronunciation you hear on CNN or the BBC.
REAL English comes from real conversations.
Close your eyes. Now see yourself speaking excellent REAL English. Imagine yourself talking to native speakers.
Imagine understanding their slang, their idioms, their fast speech.
Imagine speaking fast. Imagine using slang and idioms correctly. Imagine speaking with excellent pronunciation.
It is possible in only 6 months!
There is a better way. An easier way to succeed. Change your learning method to change your results.
Learn the better way to speak, hear, and understand real English easily and confidently.

Child’s Play
Why is it that everyone tries to teach English to adults with books filled with grammar rules and endless vocabulary?
In all of the research, one piece of information stands out from the others: children learn to speak any language without textbooks, vocabulary lists, or grammar rules.
They all learn by conversation and very specific methods.
Children have always been the best English learners for that reason. This entire program is taught with REAL English conversations.
That includes many of the slang and idioms used by native English speakers.
We call the specific “rules” of our method “The 7 Rules of Effortless English”. You have probably already read them in our email course.
When taught correctly, English grammar is easy. But the correct way is not by studying grammar books. Grammar can be easy and effortless but you must learn like children do.
“If you want to become like a native speaker, you don’t need to learn when you are a child. You need to use the same methods as a child.”
Dr. J. Marvin Brown

Hi there…
I would like to thank you for your wonderful english learning method.I really beleive that it will work. I felt confident just after following ur rules 2 days ago that you sent me through email.Thank you again for your kindness.
I could understand the video very well.Maybe it is because of the text you provided.I hope you will send me more articles as you scheduled with both the audio and text..
Like the others,I have been trying to improve my english but I failed..I improved but not really.I have never give any important to listening before this. What I was doing all this while is I studied grammar and memorised word. The worst thing is, I have never listen to the english audio withot subtitle or text..very rare to listen the audio..But now i could..It worked out just within two days..After i listened your day 1 and day 2 audio repeatedly as you told, I could understand other audio in youtube 70% without any text..I really enjoyed.I didn’t know that I would love to listen to the english audio.
Now I have become your student.I really hope that you’ll help me to learn native english speaking..Honestly telling, there is no any plan for me to buy the system..I beleive that the lessons you send me through email is enough for me to improve my speaking in a short period as u mentioned..I really thank you and appreciate you teachers.
I’ll always be waiting for your lessons through my email.
Thank you.

I think your video is great. It is very emotional and easy to understand. Also it is a good opportunity to practice listening and copy intonation and pronounciation. But I believe that article is also necessary because we can practice our reading and watch the spelling of unknown words.
Thank you again. Good luck!

First of all, I want to say thank you for all the material available and your effort to make this effortless for us!!I’ve been receiving AJ’s emails (from the Effortless English)and I’ve been wanting to buy the lessons but I’m not sure about the level. Also, I only have money for one course, so should I get the original Effortless English, Learn Real English or Power English?? Thank you in advance!
[JoeWeiss 23 July 2009] Hi Angie. All three of these lesson packages are good. Each is probably for intermediate to advanced students. Of course we use the same teaching methods in each of the packages. The Effortless English and the Power English packages contain lessons based on general topics; the Learn Real English package contains lessons based on real English conversations so they contain a lot of informal speech, idioms and slang that you would hear when speaking with a native English speaker. Hope this helps!
July 20th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Hi
I cotinue to learn engish
July 24th, 2009 at 7:11 am
Hi teachers,
In my opinion, the article and the video are easy to understand. They are a good combination to improve oral and writing skills. Nowadays, I prefer focusing all my effort on listening without any text. However, listening and reading at the same time may be helpful for most people.
I’ve just bought your lessons. I’m looking forward to understanding and speaking English automatically.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:25 am
The idea of having native speakers as “real” sourse of learning this language is awsome! But my question is : There are so many options on native speakers talk available on the net(you tube, for instance), going to a video rental and watching a movie following the english subtitles or even listening to a song …that I cannot understand the advantage of buying thios material of yours! What kind of advantage am I going to have if I buy it ?
I look forward to hearing from you
Sinceriously

I have to say “Thank You” to all the teachers. You ARE the best! Actually, the article is clear and helpful. I personally prefer the videos because I can see you teaching in front of me just like a real friend speaking with me. but, the text article is also helpful to make me fully understand all the sentences and materials. So, I want them both. Be sure, both the videos and the text articles are simultaneously important to all the students learning good English.

July 30th, 2009 at 11:59 am
plz ,,,i need some help
can some audio stories like peter pan help me in learning & improving english ?
its a very long story
but not sure about the english in it
is it slang or like what u said , the text book english
that i no o related to the real one
plz any advice
thanks in advance
[JoeWeiss 30 July 2009] Hi Dr. Fayed. Input is really important when you are learning a language. Listening is the most important form of input but reading is also very good. I think that a story like Peter Pan is good if you understand about 90% of it while you are listening to it (or reading it). Thanks for your comment and good luck with your English learning!
July 30th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

hello AJ,
for me,
I prefer both…
since the video and the text article are the best way for me to improve my english.
the video can help me to listen in english and text article can help me to improve my writing style in english.
so,I want more text article and more video since I can read more and listen more to english because I really enjoy it.

August 1st, 2009 at 9:24 am
I like the whole idea, as it is, the Real English, which is used in everyday speech among native English or American English speakers.
Another question, that in our country how many times I meet native speakers..
I think the usage of a certain level of English came out from the hands and reach of the native speakers and became global.. I mean this is the way or sometimes only way of communication between non native speakers as well, for example in the field of science, politics trade etc even in everyday contacts in their workplace etc.
It became the modern world’s latin and much more as latin had been in the past centuries. So Your effort is apprecited so much, but as everything it has its own limits…
Some people can say why should I learn how the American or British people say something in their slang or with the help of their special phrasal werbs or using their special/ local accent – when I have been there and I realised that at home, in practice, that I always use the formal old fashioned expressions to be clear, or read a book or I have my internet connection with mostly other people…
This lesson, I think is inevitable and indispensable for non native speakers/ learners who are in or will be in everyday contacts with natives mostly in a non formal way ie. friends etc, living and working in the same culture, mostly English speaking, I mean US English speaking country…
I was glad to meet this method…
Kindest regards
RGY

Hi to all.
I’ve been learning English for 4 years, but I know now it was just a waste of time. Now I started the another way of studying. With your 7 rules of course. It helped to realize how we can be mistaken reading writing all the time.
Your lessons are Perfect. I’m so happy. Even though I dont speak with native-speakers I practice my language by the way you are teaching.
Thank you a lot.
It’s nice of you that you’ve done a lot to us. And will do.
August 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 am
Interesting and informative rules.
Listening to another language is important because one has to learn the ‘tune’ or ‘melody’ of that language, too. Reading alone does not help with pronunciation and intonation.
Audio and written texts are both necessary. Video is not so important in my opinion.
August 3rd, 2009 at 9:40 am
thanks for all what u ve been doing to help us find a solution to this problem. I have been personaly making a lot of effort to be able to understand anybody’s english regardless of the accent, specialy native speakers from america and this is givin me a lot of hint on how to achieve this goal.
thanks a lot to all the team of learnrealenglish

I like this website, and I learn a lot from it.
I’d like to say that the video lesson is great, but if there are text articles it will help me learn more and faster.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:45 am
Hello,
Your suggestions are really great and easy to understand and follow. I don’t have any difficulty in understanding your video lessons. But you have just e-mailed me informing that some friends also want to see the text of the video lessons to follow it easily.
My suggestion is to you is, for friends having difficulty in following your video lessons, to add subtitles to the videos. They can see and also hear at the same time.
Thanks for your efforts…

Dear teacher,
Well, the first thing i wanna say is i’m happy to be yours student.
That’s more better if we’re watch the video against the article…because that will made us more easy to understand the video lesson. After this,we are try to listen the video without the article but we still can understand it.That’s make us feel more confidence because we can understand the lesson properly.
YOU all are made a good job for us…thank you so much!!!

I want to thank you for the 7 rules, I became your fan and will buy the lessons! I think it will be useful for me as an English teacher, to speak more fluently ang understand better and better!
Good Luck for you, you deserve all the best!
August 19th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Hi,teachers
For myself, I had read the real article before I watched the rule one video. Because it was better for me to understand what and how should I notice about the english learning in speaking.
In my opinion,I think both of them are important.(read the texts and watch viedos)
Because it depends on different people who want to enhace their insufficient parties.
But I also sugguest that if someone who want to clearly know about what your lessions are, they could read the article at first, and then listen the vedio. They would be much understanding about what they learn today.
In fact, whatever your articles or vedios are earily for us to leran in a quickly way.
If someone actually just need read the text instead of watch the vedios, I think maybe you could distinguish your lessions into two different way.(more texts or more vedios)
I hope that some of my advices will be help yours teaching.
moreover,I also whish you have a great day. ^ ^

I have not completed all the seven lessons yet. But certainly I will do it within next few days. However, I can say I like videos and texts simultaneously. When I see the video, I pay attention to the movements of the speaker’s mouth to distinguish word articulation during the speech. It works like a lab exercise for me. When I read the text first and then I see the video, the exercise becomes easier. However, I have done exactly the opposite, this way: first, I see the video several times and then I start reading the text, in order to make myself acquainted with sounds and phrasal structure of the English language.

Hi Guys,
I am convinced your work and appreciated you.
Acctually I must confess that, the base of the “English Learning”, takes my attention as well on the same points where you caught.
On this point I can say only one thing for to prouve it, that;
“LANGUAGE LIVES WITHIN THE PEOPLE…”
When I comment on the question, as one of you, pronounced in your text; the texts are so importants besides the videos too. I am agree with you, because if we are talking about “LEARNING LANGUAGE”, that means we are talking about two of our organs. Tongue and Ears. While texts are addressing to our tongues but videos are addressing to our ears.
August 29th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Thank you for sending e-mail to me. I think, I love the articles and videos as well.Articles help to improve spelling, reading and writing at the same time.while videos are helping in listening, understanding the conversation, understanding face expressions and at the same time it helps how to pronounce the correct English word.video is also showing you real events actually. So,both are important for the lessons.
video is better when the listening and .
article is better when the reading.
So, i think that I like to do both. Also what is difficult at video you can understand it at the article.
finaly, Thank you for helping me with the useful seven rules. Have a good day!

The reason I leave a comment is that I REALLY want to tell A.J. “thank you so much”.
Thanks to A.J., I’ve created my blog only made in English on myspace.com. Any student has learned from A.J. must be confident of his or her English skills. A.J. and his English students will succeed because all of student know how to teach or study English. I think A.J. is the most best teacher all over the world. Only A.j’s lesson help us become native speaker, more understand American’s culture and so on.
