Hi everyone, this is AJ with a quick update for Learn Real English.

Kristin, Joe, and I are now all back home in San Francisco and ready to do more work!

One of the first things we’ll be working on is the Learn Real English Podcast.   All three of us will begin adding podcast episodes soon (starting in May)… so you’ll get to hear all of our voices 

In the podcast, we’ll talk about real English conversation and how it is different than school English or the formal English you learned from textbooks.   We’ll also discuss our teaching methods and our future projects.

Of course, the most powerful thing about Learn Real English is that these lessons teach you “real conversation”–  the everyday idioms, slang, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary used by regular people in regular conversations.   This “real English” is remarkably different than the formal English you have studied in school.    The grammar is different (much looser and more flexible), the vocabulary is different (much more slang, more idioms), the pronunciation is different.

Syntax is also much different–  in other words, the way we create spoken English sentences is very different than the way we create written English sentences.  Most English teachers in most schools in the world actually teach their students to speak WRITTEN English–  a very formal and rigid style of English.

But native speakers, in fact, use a very fast, flexible, fluid form of spoken English.   We rarely use complete sentences, we change topics often, we interrupt and are interrupted, we pause, we create new words and new contractions, we ignore many so-called grammar “rules”.

Learn English conversation first, because it is the key to the entire language.   In other words, you must focus first on the spoken language and real conversation.  Master English conversation before you worry too much about reading and writing.

By “real English conversation”, I mean English as it is actually spoken by average native speakers in their day to day lives.   By this definition, CNN and the BBC are not “real English conversation”.   In fact, an announcer reading a teleprompter isn’t conversation at all!

There is nothing wrong with CNN or the BBC, but that style of English is not the style that is used in homes, in offices, and on the street every day.    Announcers, for example, are very careful to speak in complete sentences, to avoid most slang, to speak very clearly, and to avoid using filler words.

Real people constantly speak in sentence fragments, constantly interrupt each other, constantly use idioms and slang, constantly smash words together into strange contractions, constantly speak quickly and constantly use filler words!   That’s why so many students have trouble when they visit the USA, Canada, the UK, etc…   The English they hear on the street is nothing like the English they learned in school and nothing like the English they heard on the news shows!

Think about it this way:  casual conversation is the FIRST kind of English that small children learn.   Children first learn to chat with their family and friends.  They become totally fluent at real conversation before they learn to speak formally and before they focus on reading or learn writing.

Follow this same natural approach.  First, completely master everyday casual speech.  After you can speak fluently in real conversations, then and only then focus intensively on reading.   Read, read, and read some more.. but read easy novels… NOT textbooks!

After you have completely mastered easy English novels, and can easily finish a Stephen King novel in a week or two,..  then you can learn formal speech.  Formal speech is the kind of speech you might use for a business presentation– the kind of English you hear on CNN or the BBC.

And finally, and last of all, focus on writing.  The truth is, you will acquire strong writing skills simply by reading a lot of novels.   At this point, after mastering reading and formal speech, you will already be able to write well.  So all you need to do is learn formal or artistic writing (depending on your goals).   Take a writing class for NATIVE SPEAKERS and learn the fine points of writing powerfully and skillfully.

Follow this approach and you will master the English language.

Most important of all, remember:  learn English conversation first!

There are two worlds in English conversation learning:  the school world and the real world.  Unfortunately, the school world is nothing like the real world.

In the school world of English conversation, students study books full of grammar “rules” and books full of individual vocabulary words.   Students learn such rules as “never use a sentence fragment”, “avoid run-on sentences”, “never begin a sentence with ‘and’”, etc….

Yet, in the real world, native English speakers do all of these things every day.  We frequently speak in fragments, we frequently use long run-on sentences, we frequently begin sentences with “and”, and we frequently end sentences with prepositions.

Here’s the ugly truth- English textbooks are written by old clueless academics who have very little understanding of the real world.  Likewise, most teachers are more interested in their own authority and position than in helping their students prepare for real English conversation.

And so, students spend years in school vainly learning English from textbooks.  They waste years taking tests and memorizing rules that are not really rules at all.

And when, after all of this work, they finally go to America or the UK– they can’t understand anyone and no one can understand them.

It’s a tragedy.  But it’s an avoidable tragedy.  The solution is to place your trust in yourself- not in schools.  Dedicate yourself to learning real English conversation– the real English spoken every day by real native speakers.

Spoken English is not the same as textbook English.  This is a fact that few students understand.  They simply don’t realize that the English they learn in schools is not the English that native speakers use in normal conversations.

To be honest, I don’t know why schools neglect real spoken English.  Why do they teach only formal English?  Why don’t they prepare their students for the real world?  Ever since I became a teacher, I have asked those questions.  Eventually, I created my own companies to help students learn real spoken English.

Learn Real English is one of those companies.   At Learn Real English, we focus on the true, casual, everyday spoken English used by native speaker North Americans.   We teach idioms and slang, because native speakers use these in every conversation.

In our lessons, you rarely find full, formal, complete sentences.  Why not?  Because in real spoken conversations, native speakers almost never use complete sentences.  We speak in partial sentences.  We interrupt each other.   We change thoughts in the middle of a sentence.  We use filler words constantly.

Real spoken pronunciation is also quite different than what you learn from schools and textbooks.   In a normal conversation, native speakers tend to mash words together.  In school, you learned a few standard contractions… but in fact, we create a huge number of non-standard contractions all the time.   We connect some words together, and we cut other words shorter.

Learn Real English, as our name suggests, uses only real English conversations.

But what do we mean by “real”.   What is a “real” conversation and what is a “fake” conversation.

Our definition of real is authentic… meaning, all conversations in our lessons are natural, spontaneous, and unscripted.   Most programs use written dialogues that are read by actors.

The problem is, written English is quite different from spoken English.  In authentic conversations, we use different vocabulary– including lots of idioms and slang.   Natural pronunciation is also much different than actors reading a script.

That’s why watching CNN or the BBC will not help you understand real conversations.  Real people don’t speak like news announcers.  In authentic conversations, we speak faster, we cut sentences, we shorten words, we pause, and we use lots of filler words.   You won’t hear any of that from actors or news announcers.

Our goal was to give you absolutely authentic conversations.  So we called our friends and family and we recorded the conversations.  Often, these people didn’t know they were being recorded.  We wanted them to speak in a totally natural way, so we told them AFTER the conversation was finished.

As a result, we have a large collection of totally authentic conversations.

Of course, you need more than just the recordings.  You need to understand the recordings.  You need to understand all of the vocabulary– especially the idioms and slang.  In fact, you need to do more than just understand– you need to learn all of the English in the conversations very deeply– so you will understand it when you are having a real conversation with a native speaker.

So, our next step was to create lessons to help you understand the real conversations.   We started simply, with vocabulary lessons.  In these, we explain the common idioms and vocabulary found in the conversation.  This is an audio vocabulary lesson, so even when you’re learning vocabulary you are also improving your listening skills.   But don’t worry, all of our audio lessons have text transcripts.  So, if you don’t understand something, you can quickly look at the text and easily understand.

Next, we created Mini-Story lessons– our best lessons.  In these lessons, we use important idioms and vocabulary from the real conversation.  We then create a funny story using those idioms & words.   This is important, because you remember much better when you hear a new phrase in different situations.  You hear it in the authentic conversation, you hear it in the vocabulary lesson, then you hear it again in a completely different story.
